5 Must-Visit Spring Break Spots Near Sunterra

Posted on Tuesday, March 4, 2025

Spring Break begins March 9, what are your plans? Don’t have any? Not to worry, there are plenty of things to do in and around the Houston area. Here are our top five picks for staycation fun:

Houston

When it comes to spring break fun, what better place to be than the fourth-largest city in the United States? We suggest renting a hotel room because there is no way you can see it all in just a day. For the culturally minded, there’s nothing better than spending a day or two exploring the Houston Museum District. Be sure not to skip the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Children’s Museum Houston or the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. If you’re more of an animal-loving family, check out the Houston Zoo. Outdoorsy types should hike, bike or paddle around Buffalo Bayou Park. The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center is perfect for plant-loving families. The Greater Houston Soaring Association offers gliding every weekend.

Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston goes into hyperdrive during spring break with the return of the annual Moon 2 Mars festival. Every day you’ll discover something fun from electrifying live music, cutting-edge space tech, mouthwatering food and days of cosmic exploration for all ages. View the Lunar Terrain Vehicles and International Space Station (ISS) mimicking model, enjoy AI interactive screens and games or build your own rocket to launch. Don’t miss the immersive new film The Moonwalkers: A Journey with Tom Hanks. All are included with your general admission.

Amusement Park Tour

If you love amusement parks, you are going to want to pay attention. Landry’s Houston-area amusement properties are offering a Spring Break Pass that allows access to the Downtown Aquarium Houston, Kemah Boardwalk, and the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier for as many times as you want. It’s the VIP, all-access pass you’ve been waiting for. The pass is $77.99 per person and good for admission March 7 to March 23.

Brazos Bend State Park

Brazos Bend Park is the perfect getaway for nature-loving families. Hikers can explore 37 miles of trails. Many of these can be experienced on horseback. Others are wheelchair friendly. There are bike trails cyclists will love. You can try your luck fishing, stop by the nature center or learn about the stars at the George Observatory. And of course, you can camp, picnic or geocache.

Galveston Island

Galveston Island is a dream destination for those who crave sun, surf and a bit of adventure. Its beaches are perfect for everything from lounging under an umbrella to playing a spirited game of beach volleyball. Moody Gardens is an unmissable spot where you can wander through a lush rainforest pyramid or get up close and personal with marine life in the aquarium. Galveston isn’t just about the beaches and food. The Strand Historic District showcases Victorian-era buildings turned into trendy boutiques and cafes. You can cast your line from the Galveston Fishing Pier or join a charter for some deep-sea fishing. It’s a fantastic way to spend a day.
