Do-It-All Islands
Homebuyers are investing in longer, large islands that allow for food preparation, entertaining and dining. Some islands incorporate desks or workstations. More and more appliances are taking up residence in islands, including dishwashers, wine refrigerators and cooktops.
Double Up on Everything
More families are cooking at home which means more people in the kitchen. Rather than waiting on the oven to be free or someone to move away from the sink, homebuyers are opting for duplicates. Double islands, ovens and sinks are all popular upgrades. Some homebuyers are going all in and adding an entire second kitchen.
Smart Storage Solutions
Homeowners want to conceal the inevitable kitchen clutter. Builders are responding with narrow pull-out drawers in the island, built-in pet food stations, corner cabinets with Lazy Susans and deep drawers that can store pots and pans. Many families are opting to hide the refrigerator behind cabinet doors.
Light and Bright
The kitchen is the heart of the home, so the last thing it should be is dark. Oversized windows and skylights allow natural light to flood kitchens during the day. Recessed and under-cabinet lights keep the glow going in the evening. Many homeowners are adding statement lighting to create a focal point for the kitchen island.
Range and Vent Hood Alternatives
While some chefs still long for professional grade appliances, others have gravitated to the less prominent cooktop. When paired with downdraft ventilation, a cooktop takes up less space than the traditional range and vent hood. Other homeowners choose to have the vent blend in with the cabinetry.
Smarter Kitchens
Home automation is here to stay. Smart refrigerators, ranges and microwaves are becoming common. Built-in touch screens allow people to access recipes, check to see if they need to buy milk and keep people entertained while cooking.
Easy to Clean
Homeowners don’t want to spend all evening cleaning the kitchen. Materials that give kitchens a designer look without all the upkeep are trending. Solid-slab backsplashes in stone or metal are easier to care for than tile. Quartz countertops don’t stain as easily as granite. Tile floors that look like wood can be easily mopped. Wood cabinets are perennially popular, but it’s easier to wipe sticky fingerprints off painted ones.
