How Sunterra’s Crystal Lagoons Amenity Works

Posted on Monday, April 28, 2025

Imagine stepping outside your front door and into a tropical vacation.

Sunterra’s Sol Club Lagoon Amenity Village is opening later this year, bringing that reality to your doorstep when you purchase a new home in Katy’s in-demand master-planned community. The heart of the Sol Club Amenity Village is the Crystal Lagoons amenity, featuring white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters to swim, kayak and paddle board in.

What is a crystal clear lagoon?

Crystal Lagoons’ technology can transform any water source into a beach paradise while using minimal amounts of chemicals and energy. The U.S.-based company cites more than 1,000 lagoon projects in different stages of construction and operation in more than 60 countries worldwide, turning seawater and freshwater sources into destination beaches.

Since water in the lagoon is clean, filtered and lacking nutrients to support life, there are no fish or wildlife in the water.

How does the technology work?

Once built, Crystal Lagoons applies different ultrasonic waves with small amounts of chemical additives in specific patterns to disinfect the body of water—a patented technology that is managed online by sensors and injectors throughout the lagoon and the Crystal Lagoons Control Center.

This means that only a small portion of the total water volume needs to be filtered and that up to 100 times fewer chemicals are used than those used in conventional swimming pools.

Crystal Lagoons operate in a closed circuit, meaning the only water in the lagoon that needs to be replaced is that which is lost through evaporation if that water is not already made up by capturing direct rainfall. According to Crystal Lagoons, its technology allows a lagoon to consume 33 times less water than an 18-hole golf course and 40% less water than a park of the same size.
