Make New Friends on the Playground

Posted on Tuesday, May 14, 2024

Moving to Sunterra is an excellent opportunity for parents to make new friends. A great place to do that will be The Retreat which features a Kids Zone in the clubhouse. We’ll also have a playground where children can play and socialize and parents and caregivers can connect and build friendships. Here are some tips for striking up conversations and building those connections.

Always Smile

A warm smile can go a long way toward making others feel comfortable and open to conversation. Approach other parents or caregivers with a friendly demeanor.

Start with Small Talk

Begin with simple conversation starters, such as commenting on the weather, asking about their child’s age or interests or complimenting their child’s playfulness.

Look for Common Interests

Look for common interests or experiences that you can bond over. Perhaps you both have children of similar ages, live in the same neighborhood or share hobbies or interests outside of parenting. For example, if you notice a parent reading a book you enjoyed, mention having read it. For those in Sunterra or another new home community, there’s a chance you both just moved in which will give you much to discuss.

Be Approachable

You don’t always have to initiate conversations, but you should make yourself approachable. Be open, friendly and responsive. Avoid being glued to your phone or appearing disinterested in engaging with others.

Initiate Play

Encourage your child to interact with others by joining group activities or games on the playground. This can provide opportunities for both children and adults to connect.

Exchange Contact Information

If you hit it off with another parent or caregiver, don’t be afraid to exchange contact information. This can pave the way for future playdates or gatherings outside of the playground.

Be Respectful

Respect boundaries and be mindful of other parents’ comfort levels when initiating conversations or interactions. Not everyone may be receptive to making new connections, and that’s okay.
