Why Parents Love the School Districts Serving Sunterra

Posted on Thursday, February 19, 2026

Sunterra isn’t just a place to call home; it’s a community where kids thrive. One of our biggest draws? The exceptional school districts that young residents are zoned to — Katy ISD and Royal ISD. Both districts are celebrated for their academic programs, extracurricular opportunities, and innovative approaches to education. And with new elementary schools opening right in the heart of Sunterra last year, families here enjoy top-notch education with unbeatable convenience.

Katy ISD

If there’s one thing Katy ISD does exceptionally well, it’s setting the bar high. With more than 94,000 students across 70 campuses, this district has earned its reputation as one of Texas’ finest. In 2026, Katy ISD was ranked No. 10 for Best School Districts in Texas by Niche, No. 2 for Best Places to Teach, and No. 10 for Districts with the Best Teachers.

But accolades aside, Katy ISD really shines where it matters most—student success. The district’s robust curriculum includes Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and an industry-leading STEM program.

The district doesn’t just focus on academics, either. Katy ISD consistently ranks as one of the top 15 districts for student athletes, with teams regularly earning district and state championships. For the creatively inclined, Katy ISD’s award-winning band, orchestra, and theater programs are second to none.

And let’s not forget about the tech. Classrooms are stocked with Chromebooks, smart boards, and other cutting-edge tools, ensuring students have everything they need to succeed in today’s digital world. When it comes to community involvement Katy ISD operates the largest volunteer program in Texas.

Royal ISD

Royal ISD might be smaller than Katy ISD, but it’s been earning accolades. Serving more than 3,100 students, this fast-growing district has a reputation for innovation and preparing students for the future.

A program students and parents love is the Royal Early College High School. This program allows students to graduate with an associate’s degree alongside their high school diploma. That means Royal ISD kids can hit the ground running, saving time and money on college before they’ve even tossed their graduation caps.

The district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are also top-notch, earning it recognition as a CTAT District of Distinction for two consecutive years. And if STEM is your thing, Royal STEM Academy offers cutting-edge programs like Project Lead the Way and robotics.

Royal ISD is also known for its commitment to student well-being. Named a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase District in 2023 and 2024, it’s clear this district prioritizes connection and community. Add in its award-winning band program and you’ve got a district that supports students in every facet of their growth.

The future looks bright for Royal ISD, too. With enrollment expected to grow to 9,000–11,000 students in the next five to seven years, the district is preparing for expansion. A $356.6 million bond package passed in 2025 will fund the construction of a new high school and secure land for future schools.

Sunterra students are zoned to numerous Kty ISD, schools including Cross Elementary located onsite. Young Royal ISD students are zoned to two elementary schools, including Royal Prairie Elementary which opened its doors in Sunterra last year.

We are proud that Sunterra students attend schools in these two fantastic districts. Visit us today to learn how your children can thrive in our top-selling community.
